As per the L.A. County Medical Examiner’s Office, Matthew Perry died due to “acute effects of ketamine.” According to the report, Coronary artery disease, drowning, and the effects of buprenorphine, a drug often used to treat opioid use disorder, were all contributing factors to Perry’s passing. The death has been ruled accidental.
At the time, Matthew had been undergoing ketamine infusion therapy for anxiety and depression, and the report states that the high levels of ketamine discovered in Perry’s postmortem blood tests could have lead to both respiratory depression and cardiovascular overstimulation.
Initial reports had speculated drowning, since he was discovered in the hot tub, while others suggested a cardiac arrest. Notably, there were no signs of foul play or drugs at the scene. Marta Kauffman, the creator of Friends, mentioned that Perry had been in a positive place and sober two weeks before his passing.
